SHOUTOUT MICHIGAN: Meet Andrea Owens | Business Owner and Educator

We had the good fortune of connecting with Andrea Owens and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Andrea, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
I was born and raised in Grand Rapids, MI. I was number 5 of 7 children born to a wonderful and loving mother who was a hard-working provider for her family. She was independent and a good steward of the things she earned. There were other influential women in my life that shared the same values and beliefs like my mother. Growing up I had the privilege of observing how they handled the good and bad times. I was amazed at how they maintained their faith in God through all they endure. Their positive influence has shaped who I am today.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Celebrating over 10 years in business, HourGlass Testing Solutions provides drug testing resources and solutions for organizations looking to create a safe drug free workplace. Our services include: drug and alcohol collections, employer education and training, fingerprint services and DNA collections. We specialize in same day onsite drug and alcohol collections, boasting speedy and accurate collections and response times.

Getting to this point wasn’t easy. As a woman owned small business in an industry of giants a lot of doors were closed. This made it tough in the beginning. No one knew who I was and honestly, there were times when I wanted to quiet and just walk away. With encouragement from family, I continued to move forward. After a short time, clients came, staff increased, and through trial and error, and lots of hard work, we’ve remained humble while operating with honesty, and integrity. We’ve built a reputation of trust and respect for others. this is what pushes us to operate in excellence! All that, along with my 36 years of experience in the drug and alcohol industry is what sets us apart.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Grand Rapids is and interesting city. There is so much to do and see. Our first stop would be to check out the arts, culture and history of Grand Rapids. We would visit the Art Musuem, Public Museum and Frederik Meijer Gardens.
We would of course check out the Flights of Flavor -Food and Drink Flights. This would allow us to visit several of the area’s best dining experiences. This would include visiting the cities best soul food spots. We truly have some hidden gems in GR.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d truly like to thank God, my strength, for all the blessings I’ve received. One of the greatest blessings is my husband who has been my biggest cheerleader. He continues to support, mentor, love, and encourage me daily. He works quietly in the background without complaint, as I go about doing my work; and for that I am truly grateful. ,
